SW2's story is much sillier, and Kamiko, the "voice in your head", WILL annoy you far more than Hoji from SW 2013. You can drop the difficulty, switch your loadout to a set of weapons you may not have tried before (and there's over 70 of them so you have plenty to try out) and just kill shit to blow off steam. It's also the perfect game to just drop into after a long hard day of work. If you're a quester, then this game is the one you want. Then of course there are the free DLC bounties you can do for more stuff. You're free to go back to certain areas and just farm enemies, upgrading your weapons and skills until you're ready to close that part of the map off permanently and move on to the next area. This along with the introduced verticality allows Lo Wang to literally FLY across the areas and reach brand new heights he could never reach in the 2013 game.ĭunno if you're like me, but the reason I love RPGs so much is just feeling of taking on quests, completing them and checking them off my list, and SW2 satiates that thirst better than SW 2013. ![]() While SW2 isn't a completely open world title, it does open the layout up a bit, offering the player multiple ways to traverse a level. So much about those titles finds its way into SW2 it's insane and that's not ALWAYS a bad thing. I've said it multiple times.Shadow Warrior 2 is merely a love letter to Diablo III and Borderlands II. ![]() Also, each enemy encounter institutes a 5-star rating system which encourages the player to mix things up and use as many weapons as possible. ![]() SW 2013's weapons loadout is limited which I honestly prefer, but some might find the lack of variety to be boring, but you can upgrade the weapons as well. Skills are done using a three-button command as opposed the one button command in SW2. That said, SW 2013 lacks verticality and is devoid of other QOL features such as lack of fall damage and infinite dashing. The upgrade system is simple and straight forward and your goal is to eventually unlock everything until all you're really spending the money you find on is ammo. No minimaps, no complicated skill tree, no open world. Enter an area, kill anything that moves, find your way to the next part of the area, kill more stuff, get to the boss, kill the boss, next level and repeat. It is very akin to games like Serious Sam, Duke Nukem, etc. Most people will agree that the 2013 installment is a linear experience that is straight forward, challenging, and slightly less campy than its successor. They're both very affordable, they're both fun as hell, and they both scratch different gaming itches. My first knee jerk reaction is to tell you to just buy both. I also recently got Ghostrunner which I like a lot, too, albeit it's a little too linear for me. ![]() Note that I haven't played a Doom-like game yet, believe it or not, but I have been a huge fan of Earth Defense Force (EDF) for years, and I've played COD Zombies (which I'd like if it were more outlandish and not wave-based). I'm also an irreverent, nihilistic cynic, so the more vulgar, politically incorrect, and dirty the game, the better :) I'm just looking for a game to relax with that will last a long time during which I can fuck around and kill shit. If I'm not mistaken, SW1 is more linear and straightforward, whereas the second is more open-ended and grindy? The community seems polarized on which they prefer. I would like to get some other games during this, like Darksiders III, as well, so I'm only interested in getting one of these. Right now, due to GOG's summer sale, I can get Shadow Warrior for €6 or Shadow Warrior 2 for €7.50 (or the deluxe edition for €9.50). I already downloaded the original from 1997, and while it's fun, it's hard to get into for me due to its clunky controls and just outdatedness. For now, I'd like to play previous installments. It looks awesome! Definitely going to purchase that when it comes out.
